Far from Kokata, by the river Jalangi , stands an orphanage on shared grounds with a crematorium. Once darkness descends, the peaceful environment transforms into something sinister. The river’s water turns black, wolves howl towards the orphanage, a colony of bats fly over its ceiling and heavy fog envelopes the surrounding area. In those moments, few people are seen walking across the river side. Kolkata crematoriums, too, are lately being frequented by a mysterious presence. A deeply menacing ritual and its evil consequences are unfolding, evading the public eye. Himadrikishore Dasgupta has created an atmospheric narrative and an ending so eerie that it will haunt you long after you’re done with the book. Haunting and immensely intriguing, ‘Jalangir Andhakare’ gives shape to the dark through the use of occult and paranormal.
